PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / RIO HONDO LEAGUE

La Canada, fourth in the league last season, should improve under second-year Coach Jim Clausen, a former Moorpark assistant. The Spartans’ top weapon might be senior kicker Derrick Dyslin, a midseason transfer from Texas last year who kicked four field goals, including one from 46 yards. Dyslin’s range has drawn the attention of several Division I schools. He also was a member of the Spartans’ Southern Section championship soccer team and is being heavily recruited as a soccer player. Senior running back Sam Paneno (5 feet 11, 192 pounds), who last season rushed for 841 yards is La Canada’s top rushing threat. Senior Todd Crane, who caught 12 passes, moves to quarterback. Crane took only a handful of snaps last season, but has good leadership ability, Clausen said.
The consensus of league coaches is that San Marino and Temple City, first and second last season, should contend for the championship. La Canada is likely to battle Monrovia for third.
