In the early 1900s, Old Buttermilk was a familiar figure on the streets of Santa Ana. A peddler, he sold fruits, vegetables and buttermilk--all you could drink for 10 cents.
The vendor got the buttermilk for free. A local creamery always had a surplus and often dumped the excess into the sewer.
