Amex Names New President, Chief Operating Officer: The appointment of Thomas Ryan, 54, was approved by the exchange’s board of governors and becomes effective Oct. 15, the American Stock Exchange said. Ryan is a 30-year securities industry veteran and longtime Kidder, Peabody & Co. executive. He fills a position that has been vacant since December. He will report to Richard Syron, Exchange chairman and CEO. Syron said Ryan’s appointment will help build the continuing momentum of the Amex, which is experiencing a record year in market activity and performance.
