Vasque, McPhillips Have Good Day at Surfbout

SAN CLEMENTE — Josh Vasque of San Clemente, Iain McPhillips of Capistrano Beach and Ryan Sako of Cerritos advanced from the men’s trials Tuesday to the first round of the Main Event of the Body Glove Surfbout at Lower Trestles.
Conditions at Lower Trestles were ideal, with surf breaking at 6-foot plus waves.
Strider Wasilewski of Venice Beach took advantage of Lower Trestles’ right break, which creates a long ride for maneuvers, scoring an 8.83 ride for a total of 23.83.
The top two surfers in each heat advance to the next round. Top amateurs Chris Ward and Chris Navarro of San Clemente will compete in the main event today.
Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach, ranked fourth in the world, fifth-ranked Shane Beschen of San Clemente and Richie Collins of Costa Mesa received byes and will compete Friday in the second round of the Main Event.
Longboarding and bodyboarding competition starts Friday and the women’s competition is Saturday.
