COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Wichmann Leads Titans in Volleyball

Stephanie Wichmann was selected tournament MVP as Cal State Fullerton swept Georgetown, 15-13, 15-3, 15-12, to go 2-0 in the Georgetown Classic women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at Georgetown. Wichmann had six kills and 14 digs in the victory.
Heather Bassett and Rocki Titen also were selected to the all-tournament team for Fullerton (5-7).
Earlier, the Titans defeated Lehigh, 15-4, 19-17, 15-9.
In Big West Conference volleyball:
New Mexico State 3, UC Irvine 2--Popi Edwards had 20 kills but UC Irvine (2-8, 0-4) was defeated by New Mexico State (5-6, 2-2), 9-15, 13-15, 15-5, 15-7, 11-15.
In the Hawaii cross-country invitational:
Schaefer places third, SCC second--Jason Schaefer placed third with a time of 16 minutes 6 seconds and Larry Holland sixth in 16:17 for SCC on the 3.1-mile course at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base in Honolulu. SCC placed second in the team results behind Hawaii-Hilo.
In the women’s event, SCC’s Nikee Pool placed fifth in a time of 18:47 and her team was sixth on the same course.
At the UC Riverside cross-country invitational:
UC Irvine women finish sixth--Tanja Brix of UC Irvine finished eighth, completing the 5,000-meter course in 19:09, helping the Anteaters place sixth as a team.
UC Irvine’s men finished 12th, led by Jim Roldan, who placed 29th with a time of 26:47 over the five-mile course.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Southern California College 1, CS San Bernardino 0 (2 OT)--Chuy Miramontes scored on an assist from Phil Marquez with eight minutes left in double overtime to give SCC (5-4) the victory.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:
Pepperdine 17, UC Irvine 16--The Anteaters were scored on twice at the buzzer, once to send the match into overtime and later on the game-winner, as Pepperdine, ranked No. 4 in the nation, escaped with the victory.
