Burma Warning

Your interesting article, “Gilt Trip” (July 23), is much appreciated by the Burmese community in the Southland. Indeed Burma is a beautiful country, endowed with natural beauty, resources and history. There are a lot of amazing places to see. But time is not ripe now for tourists to visit Burma.
Burma is under one of the world’s most repressive military regimes. Readers considering travel to Burma should know that the military dictators are using forced labor to work on roads, railroads and hotels. People are also thrown out of their homes to make way for beautification projects for tourists.
More than 1,000 political prisoners languish in jails because the military regime allows no political dialogue. They have suppressed the freedom of speech, expression, thoughts, religion and much more.
