The Orange Coast College campus in Costa Mesa is on the site of a community that seemed destined to become a city during the land boom of 1887.
A health resort and hotel were built near the area’s hot-water springs. But by 1890, the Southern California boom went bust, and the area remained predominantly agricultural well into the next century.
