Tarzana : City Delays Action on Crossing Guard

The Los Angeles City Council last week put off discussion for more than two weeks the possible removal of a crossing guard at Wilbur Avenue School.
The matter was delayed at the request of the city Department of Transportation, which asked for more time to compile a report that reanalyzed the need for a crossing guard at the elementary campus site, reviewed the department’s criteria for assessing crossing guard needs citywide, and prioritized all the crossing guard needs in the city.
The transportation department had been asked by the City Council on Aug. 29 to report back to it by last week. The department--as well as the City Council’s Transportation Committee and the city’s Board of Transportation commissioners--had initially recommended that Wilbur’s crossing guard be removed because traffic levels were not high enough to justify one at the site.
The City Council is now scheduled to take up the matter again on Oct. 18. In the meantime, the crossing guard will continue to work at the site.
