Mexico Accepts U.S. Help in War Against Drugs
- Share via
For the first time in three years, Mexicans on Thursday accepted U.S. help in their war against narcotics--in the form of $6 million and a dozen UH-1 helicopters, the Foreign Relations Ministry said.
Mexico may use the money, confiscated from narcotics traffickers, to pay for equipment and programs related to the fight against illegal drugs. The helicopters will bring to 30 the U.S. anti-drug fleet at work in Mexico. All are piloted by Mexicans.
After receiving $70 million and 21 helicopters for the fight against drugs in 1991 and 1992, Mexicans refused further U.S. aid when the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration paid for the kidnaping of a Mexican doctor implicated in the murder of one of its agents.
