LOCAL HERO: Thousand Oaks resident Scott Rosenfeld says it was all in a day’s work, but his peers say that’s what makes him special (B5). The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedic was honored by a professional journal for rescuing a suicidal woman from the top of a parking garage. . . . “If someone else was in my shoes, they would have done the same thing,” Rosenfeld said. The worst part of the experience? Accepting the award Tuesday before 1,000 in a Las Vegas ballroom.
KEEP ON TRUCKING: Santa Paula resident Mary Ellen Ledbetter, the new vice president of the National Assn. of Women in Construction, was a legal secretary when she married into the low-bed trucking business. Now, 19 years later, she co-owns a two-truck company with husband Don. . . . Only about 5% of the women in the 7,000-member NAWIC are in the trades, Ledbetter said. The rest are managers, support staff or in related businesses.
ALOHA, ELVIS: The Halloween high jinks at Ventura City Hall included a mayor dressed up as Elvis and an 18th-Century padre in a grass skirt (B1). Mayor Tom Buford, who sang “City Council Blues” in a previous public outing, said it was a first. “Not that I’ve never made a fool of myself, but I’ve never dressed as Elvis.” . . . Meanwhile, a proposal to move the wooden statue of Father Junipero Serra--sans skirt--from an atrium in Ventura City Hall to a namesake church in Camarillo has some residents up in arms.
DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY: So Halloween’s over, and you’re already missing the festivities? Hey, party on. . . . At 6:30 p.m., a Day of the Dead celebration will take place at the newly created park at 572 N. Ventura Ave. in Ventura. . . . On Thursday, head to our Lady of Guadalupe Church on Colonia Road in Oxnard between 5 and 9 p.m. for its version of the Mexican festival, which honors departed friends and relatives.
