WHITTIER — Calvary Chapel running back David Kuhn rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles routed the Whittier Christian Heralds, 53-0, in an Olympic League game Friday night at Whittier College.
The Eagles (5-4, 2-2) scored often in every quarter of the game. On their first possession, Kuhn took a handoff from quarterback Dallas Kruse and ran in from 36 yards. On Calvary Chapel’s next possession, Kuhn scored his second touchdown from 22 yards on a sweep to put the Eagles ahead, 14-0, at the end of the first quarter.
Whittier Christian (2-7, 1-3) was unable to muster any form of offense. In the second quarter, Ronnie Nesland of the Eagles intercepted a Chris Vanderhook pass and returned it 61 yards to put Calvary Chapel up 25-0. Kruse ran in for the two-point conversion for a 27-0 halftime lead.
To start the third quarter, Kuhn had a 61-yard touchdown run, followed by a 16-yard touchdown run as Calvary Chapel went ahead 39-0.
Rico Andino scored twice in the fourth quarter, one a 30-yard run, the other a 12-yard run, to cap the scoring for Calvary Chapel.
“This was definitely a big game,” Kruse said. “We now control our own destiny.”
