The Mira Costa girls’ volleyball team was seeded second behind Bakersfield Stockdale on Sunday in the southern region pairings for the CIF state Division I tournament, which begins with first-round matches Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Mira Costa (22-3), which won its ninth Southern Section title on Saturday and is seeking its fourth state championship, will play host to Fresno Bullard (17-1).
Top-seeded Stockdale (28-3), which won the Central Section Division I title, will play host to Redlands (18-0), which won the Southern Section Division III title but moved to Division I for the state tournament.
Other local teams in Division I are: Santa Ana Mater Dei (20-3), which will play Roosevelt (25-1) at East L.A. College, and Laguna Beach (18-4), which will play at San Diego Mt. Carmel.
Surprisingly, neither Huntington Beach nor Newport Harbor received an at-large berth. The Oilers (17-1) were top-ranked in the state but lost to the Sailors (12-6) in the Southern Section quarterfinals.
