Toshiba Corp. to Build $1.3-Billion Chip Plant: It will be one of the largest investments ever undertaken by a Japanese semiconductor company. Toshiba said the plant will make next-generation computer chips and that it is part of the company’s plan to boost production capacity for memory and logic integrated circuits--the main chips used in computers to store or process data--by 80% starting in 1998. The investment, to be carried out over the next three years, is expected to bring Toshiba’s semiconductor investment for the business year ending March 31 to a record $1.58 billion.
