No Shots for Lemieux, No Goals for Pittsburgh

Chris Osgood turned in his NHL-best fifth shutout of the season as the Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-0, at Detroit.

It was only the second time this season the Penguins, who have lost three in a row, have failed to score. Mario Lemieux, the NHL’s leading scorer, was held without a point and did not have a shot against the Detroit defense.

Philadelphia 7, St. Louis 3--Eric Lindros had his eighth career hat trick, and first of the season, and Joel Otto scored two goals to lead the Flyers past the host Blues. The four-goal deficit matched St. Louis’ worst defeat of the season.

Colorado 7, New York Rangers 1--Patrick Roy made 42 saves as the Avalanche ended the Rangers’ nine-game unbeaten streak with the victory at Denver.

Chicago 4, San Jose 1--Bernie Nicholls had a goal and two assists, and Jeff Hackett stopped 29 shots as the Blackhawks defeated the Sharks at San Jose.

Boston 4, Buffalo 2--The Bruins’ Bill Ranford stopped 23 shots, including Randy Burridge’s penalty shot with 1:39 remaining at Boston, to hand the Sabres their eighth defeat in the last 10 games.

Florida 5, Tampa Bay 3--The Panthers continued their dominance of their in-state rival, beating the host Lightning for the ninth time in 12 tries.

Washington 6, N.Y. Islanders 5--Peter Bondra scored four goals, including three in the third period, and assisted on Michal Pivonka’s winner with 3:39 left in overtime for the Capitals at Landover, Md.

Washington trailed, 5-2, entering the third period before Bondra scored three times to tie the game with 7:25 left.

Montreal 4, Toronto 1--Jocelyn Thibault stopped 49 shots at Toronto as the Canadiens extended the Maple Leafs’ winless streak to eight games.

New Jersey 3, Ottawa 2--Randy McKay scored 41 seconds into overtime to lift the Devils over the Senators at Kanata, Ontario. McKay intercepted a pass by defenseman Jaroslav Modry inside the Senators’ blue line and chipped the bouncing puck past Ottawa goaltender Damian Rhodes.

Montreal Canadien defenseman Marc Bureau was suspended for five games for what the league termed “flagrant elbowing” of Philadelphia’s Petr Svoboda during the Flyers’ 3-2 victory Thursday night.
