Adm. Prueher Takes Over Pacific Command

HONOLULU — Two weeks after his confirmation by the Senate, Adm. Joseph Prueher assumed command of U.S. military forces in the Pacific, the nation’s largest command.
Prueher succeeds Adm. Richard Macke, who was asked to resign last fall by President Clinton after he suggested that U.S. servicemen involved in a rape case in Okinawa could have hired a prostitute instead.
Prueher, a four-star admiral, was confirmed Jan. 30 despite concerns about his handling of a 1989 sexual harassment investigation at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Prueher, who most recently was vice chief of naval operations, officially took command Tuesday at a ceremony overlooking Pearl Harbor.
