Finally someone came along, bought the Kings and had enough guts to get rid of a player with a $6.5-million salary who had 15 goals in 62 games to show for it. That’s about $318,000 per goal. So much for the Great One.

In spite of himself, Sam McMaster finally did something right--he traded an aging superstar past his prime for young talent and a No. 1 draft pick from somebody else’s team. Finally, another team besides the Kings has mortgaged its future for the quick fix that never works.
