Golden West’s Tuggle Spells Trouble for Dons

Charlie Tuggle’s double drove in Adam Bass in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead Golden West in a 5-3 upset over Rancho Santiago in Orange Empire Conference baseball.
John Matlock’s single scored Tuggle to give winning pitcher Joe Zannitto a two-run lead. Golden West is 8-7, 2-3. Rancho Santiago is 13-4, 3-2.
In other Orange Empire Conference baseball:
Cypress 7, Fullerton 2--Mike Cosgrove improved his record to 5-0 with a five-hit victory over Fullerton (14-3, 5-1). Teammate Craig Kuzmic hit his fourth home run of the year for Cypress (16-5, 4-1), which scored four runs in the top of the ninth.
Matt Simpson had a home run for the Hornets, who remain a half-game ahead of Cypress for first place.
Orange Coast 16, Saddleback 4--Rosh Gruwell had five hits and two runs scored and Geoff Wilson had three hits and three RBIs for visiting Orange Coast (14-3, 2-3), which had 22 hits. The Pirates scored seven runs in the seventh.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Cypress 4, Irvine 1--Christa Saindon, Autumn Gwinner and Sophia Garcia each had two hits for Cypress (14-6, 4-0), which scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Irvine Valley is 11-10-1, 0-4.
Fullerton 12, Saddleback 6--Saddleback’s 30 consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak ended when Fullerton scored four runs in the second. Kristy Osborne had three hits and two RBIs for the Hornets (15-2, 4-0). Saddleback (10-3, 3-1) also made six errors.
Golden West 1, Riverside 0--Jenny Hart pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for Golden West (6-2, 3-1). Michelle Weld’s single with two outs in the second inning scored Jennifer Robinson for the Rustler’s only run.
