Campaign ’96 / PRIMARIES : Super Tuesday Sweepstakes
- Share via
The seemingly unstoppable tide propeling Bob Dole to the Republican presidential nomination is expected to continue in today’s seven Super Tuesday contests, which offer 362 delegates. Polls shows Dole ahead in each state; barring an upset, he should end the day with more than 700 delegates (996 are needed for the nomination). Dole aims for particularly impressive victories in Florida and Texas, which account for more than 60% of the delegates at stake today. Steve Forbes concentrated his recent campaigning on Florida. Patrick J. Buchanan spent most of his last few days in Texas. His goal there is to keep Dole’s vote below 50% both statewide and in as many of its 30 congressional districts as possible, which could give him a share of delegates.
