Costa Mesa Crash Kills a Motorist and a Pedestrian

COSTA MESA — Two people were killed and a third critically injured Friday night when an apparently speeding car careened out of control on a curve and struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, police said.
The pedestrian was killed instantly and the driver of the car died shortly after the 6:23 p.m. accident, Police Sgt. Tom Winter said. The sole passenger in the car was airlifted to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. No names were released pending notification of the victims’ families.
The gray Dodge headed north on Placentia Avenue and was believed to be exceeding the 40-mph speed limit when the driver lost control just north of Joann Street, police said. The car struck the pedestrian, flipped and knocked down a pole, Winter said.
Evidence at the accident scene suggested the crash may have been alcohol-related, but police did not elaborate.
