This Might Require a Makeup Call

Either my sense of humor is not as finely turned as Jim Murray’s, or the Times decided to run an especially tasteless April Fools’ joke in Monday’s sports section. “Sheehan Gets Ball to Listen.”
The Pulitzer winner, Mr. Murray, insults the talented athletes on the LPGA Tour. I could not believe that I was actually reading The Times: “They won’t go on TV until they get their makeup on. Eye shadow is as important as the two iron.” Where does Murray get his facts? Has he taken a look at the LPGA members? There isn’t a lot of makeup out there, but rather pure talent and heart--that was obvious at the Dinah Shore tournament.
And regarding emotion: May I refresh Mr. Murray’s memory to Ben Crenshaw’s tears at the 1995 Masters and remind him that tears come to athletes of both sexes.
