Board to Study Buying Rail Platform

After winning a $300,000 state grant to repair portions of the Santa Paula Branch Line railway corridor between Piru and Ventura, Ventura County Transportation Commission officials found they could do the job for less than $100,000.
But the commission will not have to return the money.
Instead, the California Transportation Commission has agreed to let the commission study the possibility of purchasing the Camarillo Metrolink platform, a facility the agency has been leasing.
On Friday, county Transportation Commission members authorized staff members to hire an appraiser to set a price on the property.
Transportation planner Chris Stephens said the acquisition is consistent with the overall goals of the county Transportation Commission as well as the state Department of Transportation and the city of Camarillo.
The property is now leased from Southern Pacific Rail Corp.
Officials said negotiations for purchasing the property would begin later this spring.
