Coach: Roger Nava (fourth year).
1995: 10th in State Division I; Southern Section I-A champion; third at Orange County championships; Golden West League runner-up; 5-1 league dual-meet record.
Key returners: Irlandes Castanon, Jr.; Jorge Pena, So.; Luis Perez, Jr.; Raul Quinones, Sr.; Juan Salgado, So.
Key newcomers: Sergio Alvarez, Jr.; Miguel Balanos, So.; Alfonso Leon, So.; Carlos Malfavon, So.; Omar Mateo, So.; Tony Perez, Jr.
Outlook: The county’s most consistent boys’ team in the decade, Santa Ana is quite young but is very talented again this fall. The Saints lost three of their top seven runners, but Salgado was the top freshman in the county last season. Salgado ran under 16 minutes at the tough Mt. San Antonio College course a year ago and will be one of the section’s finest distance runners. Quinones ran 15:28 at the Woodbridge Invitational and Perez ran under two minutes in the 800 meters last track season. Nava has high hopes for Leon, a sophomore who will run among his top four this fall. Pena, Castanon, Perez and Balanos will provide depth.
