1995 in Review

The regular season belonged to Western, which posted 10-0 records on the varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph levels.

The Pioneers advanced to the Division V semifinals and were beaten by eventual champion El Toro, 41-23. A few weeks later, Coach Jim Howell, a 17-year veteran, turned the future over to his son, Toby, and retired.

For league runners-up, the season hinged on one game: Brea-Olinda’s last-second, 40-34, victory over Savanna. Both teams eventually advanced to the playoffs.

But neither team played well after that exciting meeting.Brea never won again, losing its final three games, including a 49-28 defeat in the opening round of the Division V playoffs to Corona del Mar. Savanna lost two of its final three and was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by El Toro.

Valencia’s 13-10 upset victory over Brea in the second to last week of the season was fitting for an injury-riddled team that played everyone tough, but didn’t come out on the winning end most of the time.

Anaheim figured to do better than it did, but its 0-3 start set the tone for the season. Magnolia picked up both of its victories in the nonleague season.
