Irvine (2-1) vs. No. 1 Mater Dei (3-0)
7:30 P.M. FRIDAY
SANTA ANA STADIUM
Can the Vaqueros, who have averaged nearly 30 points a game, become the first team to score against the Monarchs? Mater Dei has shut out its opponents and has scored 140 points. It’s bearing down on its first real showdown, which is next week against third-ranked Servite. In fact, the Monarchs’ biggest problem this week could be looking ahead to that matchup Oct. 4 at Cal State Fullerton, which will be the biggest game in the county so far this season. A barometer for the Monarchs: Servite dropped Irvine out of the county top 10 poll with a 35-19 victory two weeks ago.
