Shopping Center Will Fill Long-Vacant Lot

After standing vacant for nearly a decade, the property at 17th Street and Tustin Avenue is getting a shopping center.
Scott Bell, a partner with Westminster-based ICI Development, told the City Council on Monday that the shopping center, to be named the Centre on 17th, will have an unusual look.
“It has been designed to be very pedestrian-oriented,” Bell said, with outdoor plazas and sculptures and possibly a food court.
There also are plans to hold quarterly art exhibits, Bell said.
The council reacted enthusiastically.
“It will be a real asset to have those 20 acres that have lain fallow for the last eight years or so be developed,” said Councilman Robert L. Richardson. “It is really going to be outstanding.”
Bell said the center, which will house a Lucky supermarket, may open next summer.
