Council OKs $300,000 for Latino Museum

The City Council today set aside $300,000 for the Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture, which will open early next year at 1st and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles.
State Sen. Charles Calderon (D-Montebello) is chairman of the private nonprofit museum. He said the city money will be paired with $650,000 in public funds from the state.
“I’m here on a labor of love,” Calderon said. “We created this entity at a time when there was less and less contributions to nonprofit functions . . . but we worked really hard and we finally were recognized as a Latino cultural heritage center for the state.”
The museum also raised about $2 million from private sources and foundations.
The museum, which will showcase 20th-century Latino art, artifacts and recent Latino history, will open in a 1917 vintage Bank of America branch.
The bank is leasing the 40,000-square-foot building across from City Hall for $1 a year.
