Three ski-lift cars crashed to the ground after a cable went slack, killing a ski instructor and injuring 18 other people in Riederalp in south Switzerland, police said. Most of the injured were Swiss citizens; two were in serious condition. Investigators said it appeared that an axle in a disk guiding the support cable broke, and the resulting slack in the cable caused the crash. Fifteen cars carrying 35 people were in use at the time. The ski lift between Riederalp and Moosfluh in the southern Swiss canton of Valais was only a year old, the investigators said.
