STANTON — A 28-year-old Anaheim man died early Saturday after he tried to cross a busy street and ran into the path of an oncoming taxicab, Orange County sheriff’s officials said.
About 11:40 p.m. Friday, the victim apparently was cutting across Katella Avenue near Dale Avenue and ran in front of the cab, Sheriff’s Lt. Lynn Nehring said.
The taxi driver swerved to the right and tried to stop, but was not able to avoid the collision, Nehring said. Paramedics arrived and took the victim to Columbia West Anaheim Medical Center, where he died at 12:16 a.m., Nehring said.
The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives. The cab driver was not cited, officials said.
Nehring urged pedestrians to use crosswalks, particularly along main streets. He recalled that in the past year, several people who attempted to cross Katella were injured in collisions.
“We’ve had a few incidents where people run across the street and don’t estimate the speed of oncoming vehicles,” he said. “We caution people not to do that.”
