A 17-year-old wanted for allegedly shooting a Los Angeles police officer in the face was in custody Sunday after surrendering at a local police station.
The teenager surrendered about 1 p.m. Saturday at the LAPD’s Southwest station. He was accompanied by his mother, a minister and several friends, said LAPD Officer Vince Aguirre.
The alleged gunman’s surrender followed the LAPD’s release of his name and picture Friday, Aguirre said.
LAPD Officer Rex Yap and two other officers happened upon two teenage graffiti vandals late Jan. 17, police said. As their cruiser pulled up, police said, the teenagers fired two shots, one of which penetrated the windshield and hit Yap, 26, in the face. The vandals fled.
One alleged vandal, 16, was arrested after a police search. Police would not release his identity because of his age. Although police released the identity of the second alleged gunman Friday, The Times usually does not print the names of juvenile suspects unless they have been charged as adults with a serious crime.
