Orange Dominates, but Villa Park Wins Swim Meet

Orange won nine of 11 events, but still lost to sixth-ranked Villa Park, 89-81, in a Century League girls’ swimming meet Wednesday at Orange.
Jessica Klugman won the only individual event for the Spartans (4-0, 2-0), winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.82 seconds. Villa Park’s other first-place finish came in the 200 freestyle relay.
Alyson Edoff, Josephina Kim and Shannon Flahive each won two events for the Panthers (5-2, 1-1).
In another Century League girls’ swimming meet:
Canyon 101, El Modena 58--Laurie Osuna won the 200 individual medley (2:16.6) and the 100 freestyle (55.0) and Darby Schlaht won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.8) and the 500 freestyle (5:47.4) to lead Canyon (6-0, 2-0).
In Empire League girls’ swimming:
Katella 91, Cypress 76--Katie Ishihara won the 100 butterfly (1:04.28), the 100 backstroke (1:04.66) and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team for Katella (3-0, 1-0).
In Freeway League girls’ swimming:
Troy 109, Fullerton 60--Julie Denton, Ashley Ragland and Mary Haynes each won two events for Troy (5-0, 2-0).
In Century League boys’ swimming:
Villa Park 130, Orange 37--Kyle Baumgarner finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:12.74) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.56) and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:38.03) for ninth-ranked Villa Park (3-1, 1-1).
In Empire League boys’ swimming:
Katella 113, Cypress 55--Dave Rooks qualified for the Southern Section individual meet by winning the 50 freestyle in 22.58 for Katella (3-0, 1-0). Rooks also won the 500 free (5:46.14) and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
In the Best of the West softball tournament:
Santa Maria Righetti 4, Irvine 0--Jocelyn Forest (14-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 for Righetti (14-0). Katy Morrison and Brett Nakabiashi had sixth-inning singles for Irvine (10-3).
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
El Modena 17, Anaheim 1--Brian Church swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, and Garrett Omeste swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, for El Modena (7-3).
In Empire League boys’ volleyball:
Valencia 3, Western 1--B.J. Smith had 14 kills for Valencia, which defeated Western, 15-7, 14-16, 15-8, 15-6. Sanchez Belmont had 20 kills for Western (1-5, 1-2). Valencia is 7-4, 3-0.
