From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A pleasure boat carrying 11 people was dragged under a barge 100 yards from a Coast Guard cutter near Fort Lauderdale, killing a German couple and forcing the rest to swim to safety. The 41-foot U.S. Coast Guard boat was beginning to respond when a strong current pushed the 25-foot boat under the barge, Petty Officer David French said. The boat went under the barge and came out the other side, French said. The man who died was found by a salvage boat. His wife’s body was found under the barge.
