LOOKING AHEAD/UPCOMING PREP EVENTS IN ORANGE COUNTY

BOYS’ TENNIS

The Sea View League title has been decided--Woodbridge wrapped it up last week--but second place will be on the line today at Coto Valley Country Club where fifth-ranked Corona del Mar (12-6, 8-2) plays sixth-ranked Santa Margarita (16-3, 7-3) at 3 p.m. on the last day of team play this season.

The Southern Section team playoff pairings will be announced Tuesday. Play begins May 16 with the wild-card round.

Today’s game probably means more to Santa Margarita than Corona del Mar. The Eagles can tie the Sea Kings for second place, keep their No. 2 ranking in the Southern Section Division II playoffs and they can go into the playoffs on a high note.

“We need to beat an excellent team in a big-match situation,” Santa Margarita Coach Doug Williams said. “When we come to the playoffs, we’re going to see Sunny Hills, Santa Barbara or Beverly Hills. They’ve all got big guns. We beat good teams early in the season, but we haven’t done much lately.”

Santa Margarita didn’t do much of anything against Corona del Mar two weeks ago, losing, 14-4.

“They played incredibly well and we didn’t match their intensity and competitiveness,” Williams said. “We didn’t win any of the close matches. We didn’t fight enough.”

The Eagles put up more of a fight last week against top-ranked Woodbridge, losing, 12-6, and getting a singles sweep from Andy Tsu.
