Rescinding Transit Taxes
Regarding L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s suggestion that rescinding Props. A and C may be necessary to drive reform of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, May 16: It would instead drive our transit system into oblivion. These sales taxes fund not only subway construction but myriad transit-related projects.
Funds are shared with the 88 cities in Los Angeles County. The propositions also fund such services as MTA’s Metro buses, local bus systems (like Santa Monica’s Big Blue buses in Zev’s own district), Metrolink commuter rail and community shuttles such as DASH. In addition these taxes provide funds for tow trucks to patrol freeways during peak hours and para-transit for the disabled and elderly populations (to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act).
If the propositions are rescinded another source would likely have to be found to continue funding these various services, like the county. Is that what Yaroslavsky had in mind?
