As the days of British colonialism dwindle to a mere handful, soon to be replaced by a new intimacy with Chinese communism, questions about Hong Kong’s future abound; answers are few.
For many in the territory, and in the world beyond, the concerns reach beyond capitalist enterprise and Hong Kong’s [ ] continuation as an economic and trading powerhouse.
Instead, they focus on the fate of civil liberties for the 6.3 million people; on the legal independence needed to regulate both business and freedom; and on the social services sustaining those who haven’t shared in Hong Kong’s glittering success.
China has pledged to preserve for a half-century Hong Kong’s present system. But will the promise be kept?
