San Jose-based Adobe Systems Inc. reported second-quarter profit that fell below expectations as sales for computers running on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows surpassed Apple Computer Inc. Macintosh sales for the first time. The software maker said net income rose to $40.1 million, or 54 cents a share, from $22 million, or 29 cents, in the year-earlier period. . . . Santa Clara-based Visx Inc. said it will pay $4.5 million to Waltham, Mass.-based Summit Technology Inc. to settle all patent infringement claims between the two laser cornea surgery companies. The settlement enables Visx to end the case without any serious financial loss and to stop court battles that could have become more expensive than the settlement.
