Attorney to Serve as Fair’s Grand Marshal

A Camarillo attorney whose family has a long history of community service in Ventura County has been named grand marshal for the Ventura County Fair parade on Aug. 16.

Laura McAvoy, a senior partner at Nordman, Cormany, Hair & Compton, was selected by the nine-member Ventura County Fair board of directors, said Charles Schwabauer, board president.

McAvoy and her mother were recognized in 1990 with an Interface Community Service Award for their work with local charitable groups. In 1993, she was given the Ben E. Nordman Public Service Award and she was one of the founding members of the Ventura County Community Foundation board of directors.

In 1995, she received the Milton Teague Award from the United Way for her community service.

McAvoy’s father, Doug McAvoy, was on the fair board from 1976 to 1984. Her husband, Sol Chooljian is a longtime member of the fair’s Livestock Auction Committee, and for many years McAvoy participated in the fair, riding one of her Camarillo white horses with Carmen Camarillo Jones.

As grand marshal, McAvoy will preside over the parade down Main Street in Ventura. Last year’s parade attracted more than 130 entries and 30,000 spectators. The fair runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 at Seaside Park.
