Valley College to Host Fourth of July Fest

Helping fill the void left by the end of fireworks at Pierce College, Valley College will host a public display during the Independence Day Celebration of American Family Life.
The event is scheduled Friday from 1 to 10 p.m., with fireworks planned for just after dusk.
Entertainment will include jazz bands, mariachis, comedians, magicians, clowns, bird shows and exotic animals from the Wildlife Waystation.
The family emphasis means no coolers, bottles or other containers are allowed. Event chairman Gene Waldman said that policy is intended to limit alcohol consumption.
“We wanted to give something back to this community,” said Waldman. “When I was growing up, there were Fourth of July events that brought a lot of people together. That’s what we’re trying to do here.”
The fireworks are likely to draw interest from Valley residents disappointed by Pierce’s decision to end 22 years of shows. The 18-member Pierce College Council, composed of students, faculty and other employees and unions, recommended in October that the college discontinue the show.
Pierce College President E. Bing Inocencio endorsed the recommendation, citing concerns about litter and crowd damage to campus buildings.
Valley College is at 5800 Fulton Ave. For more information, call (818) 7-VALLEY or 782-5539.
