L.A. City or County May Take Over Fire Duties

The city Fire Department may be merged with the Los Angeles City Fire Department or the Los Angeles County Fire Department to save money, said Mayor Roosevelt Dorn.

Inglewood agreed in May to pay the County Fire Department $8,000 to do a survey showing how much money could be trimmed from the budget if the county took over Inglewood’s fire duties, Dorn said.

The mayor said the Los Angeles City Fire Department has proposed doing a similar survey for free. The council is scheduled to vote on the issue Sept. 23.

The city is facing an $8-million budget shortfall, which it must make up by Oct. 1, when the new fiscal year begins.

Inglewood is looking at several ways to cut its budget. “Everything is on the table,” Dorn said.
