Matadors Tabbed for Third

Defending regular-season champion Cal State Northridge has been picked by Big Sky Conference women’s volleyball coaches to finish third this season.

The Matadors received three first-place votes and 51 points. Northridge was picked to finish last in the conference a year ago, but won the title.

Eastern Washington (57 points) was chosen to win the conference, followed by Cal State Sacramento (52), Northridge, Northern Arizona (43), Montana State (40), Montana (36), Idaho State (19), Weber State (18) and Portland State (8).

Northridge opens play at the DePaul tournament next weekend.

The Matadors play their first Big Sky match at Idaho State on Sept. 18.

FOOTBALL

Quarterback Sean Fitzgerald, who played at Agoura High, Valley College and the University of Pittsburgh, is one of five players to join the Simi Valley Swarm this week before the team’s Pacific Football League opener tonight at Simi Valley High.

The other additions are offensive linemen Jim Armond (6 feet 7, 308 pounds) and Gary Schaufler (6-2, 305) and defensive backs Ed Cass and Sean Fennison.

The Swarm (1-1, 1-0 in the Southern Division) play the Fresno Bandits, last year’s Minor League Super Bowl champions, at 7 p.m..

A professional sky-diving team is scheduled to land in the stadium and deliver the game ball before kickoff.

GOLF

Justin Ohye of Calabasas shot a final round of three-under-par 69 to win the 13-14 year-old division of the American Junior Golf Assn. Colorado Junior Roundup at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, Colo.

Ohye, a sophomore-to-be at Calabasas High, had a three-day total of six-under-par 210--eight strokes better than runner-up Kevin Na of Diamond Bar.

Ohye’s brother, Jon, had a three-round total of 229 to finish in a three-way tie for 36th place in the 15-18 year-old division. He was 23 strokes behind winner Damian Hale of Jensen Beach, Fla. Charlie Smith of Santa Clarita overcame a first-round 84 and finished in 40th place with a three-round total of 231.

SOCCER

Former Westlake High standout Eric Wynalda was placed on the injured reserve list by the San Jose Clash, his Major League Soccer club. Wynalda has a strained groin.
