Matadors Fire First Volley, Win Title in Chicago

Cal State Northridge claimed the championship of the season-opening DePaul Invitational women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at Alumni Hall in Chicago, winning two matches to finish with a 4-0 record.
Senior outside hitter Nancy Ma was named most valuable player despite sitting out the Matadors’ 15-8, 15-4, 13-15, 15-8 victory over Evansville (2-2).
Ma had 19 kills and 11 digs for Northridge in a 15-7, 16-14, 15-13 victory over Eastern Illinois (3-1).
Freshman hitter Kristin Sigel and sophomore setter Ellie Flato of Northridge were named to the all-tournament team.
Sigel had 14 kills and 21 digs against Eastern Illinois, and contributed eight kills and 16 digs against Evansville.

Pepperdine beat Northern Arizona, 15-9, 14-16, 15-5, 12-15, 15-8, in the Pepperdine tournament at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Nicole Sanderson had 21 kills and five aces for the Waves (3-0).

The Master’s lost two matches to finish the Concordia tournament in Irvine with a 1-3 record.
Misty May had eight kills, nine digs and five blocks for the Mustangs in a 15-12, 14-16, 15-1, 15-8 loss to Fresno Pacific (4-0).
Kim Gibson had 14 kills and five blocks for Master’s in its 15-8, 4-15, 15-10, 7-15, 17-15 loss to Concordia of Minnesota.

Calabasas High junior Brooke Neils and Westlake senior Brooke Rundle reached the girls’ 18-and-under final in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Youth National tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Top-seeded Neils and Rundle will face second-seeded Leslie Punielli of Laguna Nigel and Jami Bari of San Juan Capistrano today in the championship match.
Neils and Rundle defeated Sonja Nielsen of Poway and Kellie LaBossiere of Del Mar, 15-12, in a semifinal match after beating Kira Bozak of Agoura and Heidi Carr of Wisconsin in the quarterfinals, 15-7.
