A look at the Southern Section divisions in which Orange County’s football teams compete:
DIVISION I
Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly, who have combined for 16 Southern Section championships, have met five times in the playoffs, with the Monarchs winning the last three.
That includes a 34-14 victory for Mater Dei during last season’s drive to the Division I championship.
RUSHING LEADERS
After finishing his career with Valencia in 1985 with 5,397 yards rushing, Ray Pallares held the county record for 11 years. But this fall, Pallares has been passed not once, but twice.
First it was Michael Jones of Laguna Hills, who holds the record with 6,821 yards after gaining 195 in the Hawks’ 19-0 victory over Covina Northview Saturday.
Now Pallares is third behind DeShaun Foster of Tustin, who became the first in county history to rush for 3,000 yards in a season with 3,020, after gaining 147 against Brea Olinda Saturday. Foster has 5,430 for his career.
