Teachers Will Hear About Civil Rights Struggles

Dozens of area teachers are expected to gather in Norwalk today for a two-day conference on how to introduce middle and high school students to the Mexican American civil rights movement.
Sponsored by Southern California Edison, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and KCET-TV Channel 28, the conference will focus on a four-part PBS documentary that traced the history of groups such as the Brown Berets and Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers union.
Conference organizers said that most of the teachers who have signed up for the meetings work for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, whose Pioneer Boulevard headquarters will host the conference through Friday.
