EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Dream Away took the lead on the backstretch and held off two colts to win the $1-million Meadowlands Pace on Friday night.
Dream Away paced the mile in 1:50 2-5 in edging longshot At Point Blank and Western Dream, giving driver Ron Pierce his first Meadowlands Pace victory.
Favored Arturo finished fourth and George Steinbrenner’s Rod’s Deal finished a distant eighth in the field of 10 colts and geldings.
The winning time was the same that Dream Away posted last week in winning one of the three eliminations for this race.
Dream Away paid $9.60, $5.80 and $3.20 and earned $500,000 for Canadian owners Sam Goldband, Marvin Katz and Al Libfled. The win was the fifth in eight starts for the one-time $85,000 yearling purchase.
