The Newport Beach Police Explorers and the Newport Harbor High School marching band will lead festivities Aug. 17 at the grand opening of Bob Henry Park.
The celebration will begin at 12:30 p.m. and include presentation of an original painting of the park by local artist Michael Bryan, poster giveaways, exhibition soccer, baseball and softball games, and lunch courtesy of the Arches Restaurant.
Roving entertainers will include jugglers, balloon artists and mimes.
A free shuttle will run from 1 to 5 p.m. and transport celebrators to the park from Newport Harbor High School, 16th Street and Irvine Avenue.
The new 4 1/2-acre park features two diamonds, a soccer field, a tot lot, restrooms and a parking lot.
The park, at Dover Drive and 16th Street, is named for Newport Beach Police Officer Bob Henry, who was killed near the site two years ago while on duty.
