Workers Treated for Fume Exposure

Fifteen Corning Samco Co. workers were sent to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning late Wednesday night after they complained of headaches and dizziness, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

Paul Rogoski, a company spokesman, blamed exhaust fumes from a propane-powered forklift for the illnesses.

The employees worked in the packaging area, which had air fans and air conditioning but no open windows, said Rogoski.

LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said that by the time paramedics arrived the workers had driven themselves to Providence-Holy Cross Medical Center and the carbon monoxide had dissipated. The workers were released from the hospital shortly afterward, officials said.

The plant, which employs 370 people and manufactures plastic lab ware, did not close down following the accident, Rogoski said.
