Reinstated Soldier to Run for Congress

Margarethe Cammermeyer, who successfully fought the National Guard’s attempts to discharge her for being a lesbian, plans to run for Congress. Cammermeyer, who recently retired from the Washington Army National Guard as a colonel, said she will seek the seat held by two-term Republican Rep. Jack Metcalf. The decorated Vietnam veteran, a Democrat, was discharged in 1992 after disclosing her sexual orientation in a 1989 interview for a top-secret security clearance. A federal judge ordered her reinstated. Her battle resulted in a best-selling book and a movie.
