Supervisors Nix Idea of Auditor Requirements

The Board of Supervisors unexpectedly killed a proposal Tuesday that would have mandated that candidates for auditor-controller to meet minimum education or experience requirements.

Backers said the proposal would better ensure that candidates had some financial experience. But the change required support of all five supervisors, and Supervisors Todd Spitzer and Jim Silva expressed doubt.

“It gives the public a false sense of security,” said Spitzer, explaining that voters themselves ultimately must decide which candidate is most qualified.
