Santa Ana Men Reach Semifinal With Win

Santa Ana’s Carlos Romero led all scorers with 20 points as the Dons defeated Rio Hondo, 68-59, in a quarterfinal game of the Santa Ana tournament Monday.
Greg Gray had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Ana (10-5) and teammate Mike Vogeding had 10 points and six rebounds.
DeJuan Sharkey led Rio Hondo (2-13) with 14 points, and Jermel Jones had 11.
The Dons will play East Los Angeles in the semifinals at 8 tonight. Saddleback will play Skagit at 6 p.m.
In another tournament game:
Saddleback 70, Pasadena 64--Tyrone Johnson scored 16 points and Vernon Jackson had 14 to lead Saddleback (8-6). Donzell Hayes and Shemmar Frazier each scored 12 points and Adam Metchikoff had 16 rebounds for the Gauchos.
In the Hancock tournament:
Irvine Valley 73, Santa Barbara 48--Ben Esplin made seven of 12 field-goal attempts and scored 20 points for Irvine Valley in the first-round game. Will Byrd made seven of nine shots and scored 16 points for the Lasers (12-3), who led, 38-21, at the half.
In the Fullerton women’s basketball tournament:
Fullerton 80, Ohlone 58--Chris Payne had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead Fullerton to a second-round victory. Teresa Manning had 21 points for Fullerton, which took a 41-31 halftime lead. Fullerton (8-6) plays San Diego Mesa at 6 tonight in a semifinal game.
In a first-round game, Fullerton defeated Los Angeles Pierce, 98-68. Fullerton forced 37 turnovers, including 14 by guard Sunday-Kae Sims. Manning scored 23 points, Payne had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Joyce Sudario scored 17 points for the Hornets (6-7).
Irvine Valley 81, Los Angeles Valley 63--Jennifer Okeefe scored 20 points to lead the Lasers.
Irvine Valley will face Los Angeles Harbor at 8 tonight in the semifinals.
In the Grossmont women’s basketball tournament:
San Diego Lady All-Stars 103, Golden West 43--Tracy Downs scored 13 points for Golden West. The all-star team was a late replacement for Linn-Benton (Ore.).
