Stating that Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was not suitable for ninth graders, one of the parents in a Maryland school district had it removed from the English curriculum because “it gives a dated and slanted portrayal of whites” (Jan. 11). Do they teach “irony” to the ninth graders there?
