Law Would Allow Curbs on Skaters

Because of complaints about property damage caused by skateboarders, the City Council tonight will consider a new ordinance that would regulate the use of skateboards and roller skates.
The ordinance would allow public and private properties to ban skateboards, skates and similar wheeled devices. Violators would face a $100 fine.
As skateboards and in-line skates have become increasingly popular in recent years, the Police Department has seen a steady rise in the number of complaints from the public, school officials and business owners, Capt. Chuck Babcock said.
For instance, skateboarders rearranged picnic tables to form ramps and jumps on some campuses, he said, and classroom doors and wall panels have been damaged. Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District officials have expressed concerns to the city about property damage, potential injuries and liability.
Businesses and property owners have complained about skateboarders on sidewalks, parking lots and alleys.
The ordinance would give the city discretion to prohibit skateboards and similar devices on public property, Babcock said.
The council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the chambers, 401 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 993-8231.
